Print/Microfom Serials:
Maritza completed the project to review and update HSL SERHOLD holdings.  This project was begun in the summer of 2005 and required review and updating of an extensive number of HSL serial holdings.  She will next be working on  a project to identify print titles that are included in the JSTOR collections.  We will consider not binding those and withdrawing the unbound issues as they become available in JSTOR.

Electronic Resources:
A large number of new databases were ordered this month to use savings before the end of the fiscal year.  New orders were placed for the following:
  • 19th Century U.S. Newspapers
  • African American Experience
  • Art Museum Image Gallery
  • EBSCO Literary Reference Center
  • Ethnic NewsWatch
  • Gale Literature Resource Center
  • Latino American Experience
  • London Times Digital Archive
  • Mental Measurements Yearbook and Tests in Print
  • Natural Standard
  • New York Times Historical Archive
  • Oxford Reference Online Premium
  • Play Index
  • Social Explorer
  • STAT-USA
  • Testaments of the Holocaust
  • Value Line Research Center
  • World Bank Indicators
  •  Worldwide Political Science Abstracts

Serial Acquisitions Unit Operations:
We made another $190,000 prepayment to Swets to cover the 2008 subscriptions.  The prepayment will net us a small discount.
Swets was able to load in a new set of reference codes for our subscriptions.  The three reference fields we are now using include:
  • 1 = Order record #
  • 2 = Fund code
  • 3 = CODE1 (department)
  • 4 = unused

Buddy Pennington:

In early June, I attended the NASIG conference in Louisville, Kentucky.  I was honored at the conference luncheon for my service as the Chair of the NASIG Database and Directory Committee.  I was also able to visit the University of Louisville library to see their robotic storage facility.  I forwarded information to Sharon and Bonnie.

Inspired by a session at the NASIG conference, I wrote a wiki page on COinS, an OpenURL technology that allows users with a linkresolver to link to citations from COinS web pages anywhere on the internet.  The page includes instructions on how to install a browser plugin and configure it for UMKC's Article Linker as well as how to use a web generator to generate COinS citations to add to your web pages.  I shared this information with the Discovery Team.  The page is available at: http://sauwiki.pbwiki.com/COinS+at+UMKC.

Linda and I continued working on Feed Builder issues.  I submitted an enhancement request to let libraries use DATE fields in the order record instead of the CAT_DATE.  This is an issue for libraries that share bibliographic records as a new title for one library will not appear in Feed Builder if another library has previously cataloged it.  We reviewed new items from January through March and determined that roughly 15% of new UMKC items had been cataloged previously by another MERLIN library.

I took a two week vacation the last two weeks in June.

Peggy Slagle:

Peggy continued her participation with the UMKC Staff Council by planning and helping with the annual All Staff Picnic that was held on June 20th.

Peggy also continued working on her project to clean up the KNP collection.  She is specifically focusing on cleaning up the "boxes" by reviewing the unbound issues.  She has discovered a number of noncurrent titles with unbound issues that can be either bound or discarded as appropriate.  This project will result in cleaner shelves, more space for shifting and updated and more accurate checkin records in Millennium.

Thanks to Peggy for checking in HSL periodicals while Sue Sykes Berry was out on vacation.

Maritza Nino:

We were able to celebrate as Maritza completed the HSL SERHOLD project.
