Print/Microfom Serials:
The following orders were cancelled:
  • InfoWorld - ceased publication
  • RILM Abstracts - ceased publication
  • South Carolina Economic Indicators - no longer distributed in print.  Freely available online (requested that online title be cataloged)
  • Trade Union World - ceased publication

The following new subscription orders were placed:
  • Internet Reference Services Quarterly - new online-only subscription on REF fund
  • McSweeney's - new print subscription on PHL fund

Number One is a UMKC student publication.  Reference asked about it as we had received nothing since 2004.  I contacted Amy Lucas at New Letters and was able to get all of the published volumes.  I set up the checkin card to "claim" future issues to ensure that we have a complete set of holdings.

Print claiming still works on occasion.  We received December 2006 – April 2007 issues of American Theatre and December 2006 and January 2007 issues of the Foreign Service Journal through claiming.

Music and Media staff brought up a cart of periodicals for people with visual disabilities.  The periodicals consisted of titles with a few issues from the 1980's. All but one were discarded. The exception was Whole Person Inc., a newsletter published in Kansas City.  We had one volume already in our collection.  No.25-67(1983-1990) were added in per Rebecca Power.

Electronic Resources/Serials Solutions:
The following titles were activated in Serials Solutions:
  • Clinical Science (Portland Press)
  • Legislative Studies Quarterly (IngentaConnect)
  • New England Quarterly (MIT Press)
  • Nursing for Women's Health (Blackwell-Synergy)

At the request of Cindy Knowles, I created a short list of ILL policies for the major electronic resources that they can use when filling ILL requests.

We received a number of database renewals this month.  I composed reports comparing pricing increases as well as usage data and usage costs and distributed the information to the relevant subject specialists.  Renewals included: OCLC FirstSearch databases and Omnifile V.  For OCLC FirstSearch, EconLit was not renewed (moving to EBSCOhost in July).

Serials Solutions is rebranding its products with "360" in the title.  They have announced plans to upgrade their client center.

Serial Acquisitions Unit Operations:
Swets is migrating its client site away from DataSwets to a new SwetsWise site.  I filled out the survey to get our accounts activated in SwetsWise.

OCLC loaded in our serial Local Holdings Records.  LHRs were loaded in for 32,388 titles.  I created a procedure for maintaining these records in OCLC.

I inserted the UDCOUNT codes into checkin records to begin testing the PCOUNT field.  We will be using the PCOUNT field to track items checked in.  The current UDCOUNT codes are:

  • a = periodical
  • c = continuation
  • f  = microfilm
  • m = microfiche

Buddy Pennington:
For Librarians' Council:
  • UL Budget and Fiscal Affairs Committee met with Bonnie to review committee budget recommendations (travel, equipment requests, salaries)

I continued to work with Linda Fox on testing out the Millennium Feed Builder product  Two config files (new MNL and new Music titles) were written and sent to MCO to add to the MERLIN server.  After some tweaking, we began to get some results.  We noticed daily problems with the feeds.  The primary issue included titles either being on the feed that should not have been on the feed or titles left off the feed that should have been included.  I created a wiki to track the daily problems.

The ILS Team met to cast its votes for the Innovative Enhancements.  I worked with Monographic Acquisitions, Serial Acquisitions and Search and Verification unit staff for votes for the Serials and Acquisitions modules.  The ballot included two enhancements that I had submitted.  One was for more flexibility in exporting serials claims information.  The other was for extending the invoice number and note fields for serials electronic invoicing.

On the NASIG front, I was asked by former president Mary Page to serve on a small task force charged with reviewing proposals for technology solutions.  Currently, NASIG volunteers manage the website, listservs and membership database.  NASIG is investigating the option of outsourcing that work to a service provider.  As Chair of the Database & Directory Committee, I added the 2007 award winners to the membership database and emailed the list of inactive members to Dalene Haworth, who manages the NASIG-L listserv. I also ran the new member reports for February and March.  I submitted the annual committee report to the commitee Board liaison.  The report will be published in an upcoming NASIG Newsletter issue.  The 2007/2008 committee roster was finalized.  I have decided to step off the committee for the new cycle.

On April 11th, Norene Allen and Tina Feick from Swets paid us a visit to review our service and look at new services Swets is providing (ScholarlyStats).

I coordinated the library task force on drafting a library mission statement.  I set up a wiki for the task force and we met and drafted a mission statement that I then presented to the Planning Coordinating Team.

Peggy Slagle:

Congratulations to Peggy for being elected to Staff Council!  Her tenure will begin in May.

Peggy returned to work on April 24th.  She worked parttime as she continued to go to physical therapy sessions in the afternoons. We had a celebration for her on April 26th.

Maritza Nino:

Maritza did a wonderful job covering while Peggy was out.  She managed to process a music monograph using LARS.  This is something that Peggy normally handles.  Maritza also continued her work on the Staff Announcements committee and attended a workshop on tax deferred investing.  She worked diligently to ensure that enough binding was processed to meet the binder's minimum for pick-ups and deliveries.
