Inhouse Usage Statistics Cards
Access Services maintains a rolodex of barcoded index cards for the current print periodicals. They use these cards to count inhouse usage of the unbound periodical issues by scanning the cards when they are reshelving the periodical issues. Therefore, new cards are created when there is a title change or a new current periodical is added to the collection.
Creating a new card
- Grab an old card catalog card (there should be a stack in the supplies cabinet).
- Place a barcode in the top center of the card.
- Enter the following information into a label and print out the label (there should be a sample card to help you with formatting).
- Title (in bold)
- bib record number
- item record number
- NOTE: continues [previous title] - if you have a title change
- Place the label below the barcode.
Adding barcode to item record
When cataloging titles a new periodical title, they will create an item record for the inhouse usage statistics. You will need to add the barcode to that item record.
- Find the periodical in MERLIN and then select Summary and Item to see the list of item records.
- Select the item record you need (generally the KNP one) and open the record.
- Insert a field: 'b' for barcode.
- Wand in the barcode on the cataloging card. The barcode should appear in the barcode field.
- Save the item record and close out.
The card is now ready to take down to Access Services.
